Can we call them the Chesapeake Mets now?
The Mets made a major splash in the free agent market today, signing free agent OF Michael Cuddyer (Chesapeake) to a 2-yr deal worth $21 million. Cuddyer had rejected the qualifying offer he had gotten from the Rockies, meaning the Rockies will get the Mets top draft choice , 15th overall, in the 2015 draft.
Cuddyer joins his longtime friend and fellow Chesapeake-native, 3B David Wright, in the Mets lineup to provide a big bat for a rebuilding team that, in light of one of their pitchers getting ROY honors, could make some waves in the NL east in 2015.
Last year, an injury-plagued year, Cuddyer hit .332 with 10 HR and 31 RBIs in just 49 games. For his career, he his hitting .279 with 187 HR and 753 RBIs. He batted .331 in 2013 to take home the NL batting title.
