They are celebrating again in Virginia’s lower Shenandoah Valley!!
The Salem Red Sox, the Single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will get to defend their Carolina League championship
Salem swept Wilmington in a doubleheader, winning 5-1 and 3-0 to clinch a playoff birth and a first round date with Myrtle Beach. The only thing that is unsettled there is whether Myrtle Beach can claim the division title and home field advantage, or whether Salem can take the division title.
Salem sits 2 games back of Myrtle Beach, and each team has 2 games left. If Myrtle Beach wins the division, they will host the entire first round. If Salem can rally to win, they will host Game 1, and Myrtle Beach would host Games 2 and, if necessary, 3.
Salem will attempt to become the first team to outright win back-to-back Carolina League championships since the Winston-Salem franchise did so in 1985-1986. (Wilmington won the championship in 1998, Myrtle Beach won in 2000, and both teams were declared co-champions in 1999 when the fifth and deciding game of the title series was cancelled due to Hurricane Floyd.)
